Accommodations
A locker for the anchor rode is all the way forward followed by the Master Stateroom which contains an offset double berth with abundant dry storage beneath and a second area for extra anchor rode, spare anchor, etc. To port is a well-appointed Head Compartment with separate shower, marble countertop and stainless steel sink. Opposite the head to starboard are hanging lockers, storage and drawers.
Next aft is the Main Saloon with an L-shaped dinette to port and a straight settee opposite to starboard. Under the settee is hidden a lee cloth which can be easily connected to create an excellent sea berth. The dinette table encloses a very well-insulated engine compartment. This table has a large hinged leaf, built-in drawers on the inboard side and three access doors to the engine itself. The hinged table top can also be lifted to provide top access to the engine. Custom boxes under the table top provide spare parts storage. The Main Saloon has nice arched/louvered cabinets and two arched open cabinets for storage plus additional storage behind settees.
At the aft end of the starboard settee is a very functional, aft-facing Navigation Station with large chart table, shelves, drawers and a custom distribution panel. Her electronics are all easily accessible.
To port, opposite the Navigation Station, is the U-shaped Galley which is a true gourmet's delight with a Seafrost BD 12v dual coldplate refrigeration unit, top and front-load refrigeration and a separate top-load freezer aft (temp monitors and 4" poured insulation). Above are commodious lockers. Outboard is the gimbaled three-burner propane stove/oven with remote solenoid shutoff. The deep double stainless steel sink with new faucet is forward and near the centerline. There is a hot and cold pressure water system with manual foot pumps for both salt and fresh water. Outboard of the sink are a large top-load locker and an additional front-load locker. The spice rack is a convenient addition. A pull-out cutting board and knife drawer are built into the cabinets. She has white Formica countertops with access to dry storage compartments.
There is a Guest Cabin aft to starboard with a double bunk and ensuite head with marble countertop and stainless steel sink.
Please note: solid teak interior staving; satin varnish on walls; white on headliner; teak and holly sole; deluxe 4" foam cushions; ship's bell; brass clock and barometer and three oscillating 12V fans. A teak grate and dust bin are located at the base of the companionway, with wastebasket space behind the ladder.

Remarks
The design of the Passport 40 reflects a focus on comfort without any compromise of sailing ability or safety underway. Robert Perry designed this yacht with moderate draft and a long fin keel. This assures good tracking and provides excellent windward ability. The skeg-hung rudder is well protected and large enough to provide excellent steering. The hull is solid fiberglass with decks cored for stiffness. Ample form stability combined with 8500 lbs. of ballast keeps Pelican on her feet in a blow. The large transom allows the beam to be carried well aft, which increases cockpit space. It is a comfortable cockpit, with wide seats and nicely sloped coamings. At 6'2", I can lie down on the seats and still have room to spare. A well thought out deck layout facilitates easy sail handling for shorthanded or singlehanded passage making.
The exterior is particularly striking. To quote from the Passport 40 brochure "Good weather should be reserved for sailing not varnishing! The Passport 40 has just enough teak to make the boat extremely handsome but not burdensome." This is indeed the case. When you dinghy away from this boat and turn and look back, the touch of exterior teak combined with a pleasing sheer will provide a pride of ownership in a way that not many current designs can.
Pelican has a powerful and fuel-efficient Yanmar 4JH3E, new in 2004, that, combined with the yacht's modern underbody, allows for fast, easy motoring when one finds oneself trying to make time against an adverse current or sea.
Pelican's amazing Gori 3-blade propeller deserves special mention. When powering, this eningeering masterpiece provides two speed settings, "normal" and "over-drive." When sailing, the prop folds up into a highly efficient tear-drop shape that minimizes drag. More information on Gori propellers can be found by doing an Internet search on "Gori propellers," or by contacting us for the link. You will be impressed!
The interior accommodations of this fine Passport are explained in detail in the full specifications section above; however, it is worth noting that this is a very well maintained yacht. The white interior panels contrast strikingly with her solid teak joinery. The overall impression is of rich wood and luxurious upholstery; an airy, open feeling.
Pelican represents a tremendous value for those in the market for a yacht designed, built, finished and maintained to high standards. |
